Port Jefferson is a harbor village with real maritime history. The deepwater harbor supported shipbuilding through the 1800s, and today the waterfront is lined with restaurants, shops and a marina. The Bridgeport and Port Jefferson Ferry has been crossing the Sound since 1883, backed early on by P. T. Barnum, and it is still one of only two commercial ferry routes between Long Island and the mainland.
The village has an LIRR station at the end of the Port Jefferson Branch, but it is not a practical airport connection. The ride to Penn Station is close to two hours, and you are still not at a terminal. Gary drives Port Jefferson to JFK in about an hour and fifteen minutes, with pickup at your door. MacArthur Airport is twenty five to thirty minutes south and LaGuardia about an hour and ten.
There are really two Port Jeffersons. Lower Port holds the harbor, the ferry terminal and the restaurants. Upper Port sits by the train station up the hill. Gary picks up in both, plus the streets above the harbor. Theatre Three performs in an 1874 building and the Dickens Festival fills the village each December, so visitors flying into JFK or LaGuardia often need a ride out here as well.
