St. James is a North Shore hamlet in the Town of Smithtown with a real small town feel. The St. James General Store on Moriches Road has been open since the 1850s and is the oldest continuously operating general store in the country. In the early 1900s the area drew the Barrymore family, Buster Keaton and Irving Berlin.
The village has an active LIRR station on the Port Jefferson Branch, and it opened in 1873, making it one of the oldest stations still standing on the whole railroad. It is charming. It is also not a practical way to reach an airport. The ride to Penn Station alone runs close to two hours, and you still have to get across the city to JFK or LaGuardia. A car service from St. James reaches JFK in about an hour.
